It is important not to overdose and if the intent is to remove infection from individual fish then rather place the fish in another small temporary pond loaded with salt for a few minutes. Use about 2 lbs per 20 US gallons of pond water as a general treatment. As a short term soaking to treat individual fish use about 3 times as much salt as above.

Interpet Koi Pond Test KitTesting pond water can in itself become an intriguing and interesting hobby. Get a reliable test kit however.

 

  • You’ll need a net that can reach the bottom of the pond easily, without you having to stretch too far over the pond. The chances are that your koi fish will instinctively try to avoid being scooped up by the net, and if they can get out of harm’s way at the bottom of the pond, they will certainly do it.
  • When choosing a handle, usually there is a choice of wood or aluminum koi nets. Remembering that control is all important when trying to catch fish, aluminum is stronger and wobbles less when maneuvered through water. On the other hand, a wooden handled net will not sink into the pond should you drop it.
  • The mesh of the net doesn’t need to be too fine when catching koi or goldfish. A fine mesh koi net will drag when it’s pulled through the water, so it’s better to choose one with a more open mesh.
  • You should also check that the goldfish net is soft, as a net made from coarse materials could harm your fish.

Floating Cages for Holding Sick Koi or Breeding Pond Fish

Floating cages are used for isolating your koi fish in the pond whenever they become sick, for instance, if they have an ulcer. By keeping your sick koi in a cage like this, you can easily retrieve it regularly for treatment, without needing to chase after it with a pond net every time. Ideally, your floating cage should be at least 1 cubic meter, and made using the softest mesh you can find.

Floating Baskets as Alternative to Floating Net Cages

Similar to a floating cage, a floating basket is used to examine your koi close up. Simply steer the koi into the basket using your goldfish pan type new net, and then once it’s inside you can shut the basket and let it float up to the surface. It will rise approximately one quarter of its height out the water, letting you get a good look at the koi fish while it is safely contained.

Koi Inspection Bowls

Koi inspection bowls (normally blue in colour) come in a range of sizes and are useful and very necessary for the keen koi keeper. The best size bowl would be around 1 meter in diameter, holding up to 150 liters of water.

You can use your bowl for a range of different things – isolating fish for medical treatment, stripping its eggs or sperm during spawning time, or introducing new fish (fill the bowl with pond water and allow the new fish to acclimatize in the bowl first). If you’re really serious about your koi and want to keep records of them, you will find that a bowl makes it a lot easier to take photos of them and record details such as its size and pattern distribution.
