These filters work by killing algae by exposing the algae that cause 'green water' to UV (ultra violet) light. Fish-Mate Pressurized UV & Pond Filter ComboThe algae clump together and reach a size that the filter's mechanical section can remove them (normal single algae are far too small to be removed in any pond filter). The mechanical filter section contains profiled filter sponge pads which trap algae clumps and other large particles. These sponge pads are easily rinsed. After mechanical filtration is finished the biological section of the combo unit takes over. This unit contains Alfagrog (called Supra in USA) which is a powerful biological filter medium (also called biomedia). Supra has more than 100 times the biological surface area of most types of plastic media and this allows much larger colonies of bacteria to be grown. In tuen large bacteria colonies remove ammonia and nitrite more quickly and efficiently.
