What Does The Model Number Mean?
We refer to a pond or fountain normally by its flow characteristics. Obviously there are different situations that require more or less water flow form the pump. As an example if you have a 1 foot wide waterfall running into your pond this will need a certain flow of water to look and sound good. On the other hand if you had a waterfall 2 feet wide then about twice as much water flow would be required for the same appearance and sound effect.
The number of the submersible pump's model is given to be able to quickly compare one model with another but you MUST be very careful because the number refers to MAXIMUM flow in litres per hour that can be possibly delivered by that pond or fountain pump. For example the Hozelock Cascade 3000 has an approximate maximum flow of 3000 litres per hour. Note though that maximum flow for a pond pump occurs only when there is no pipe attached ... in other words at the pond surface.
Maximum flow can therefore be very misleading. Think about it ... if you've decided you want a pump to produce a minimum flow of 3000 litres per hour over your waterfall that is 1 metre above the pond surface then the Hozelock Cascade 3000 is useless to you because at 1 metre above the pond surface the flow will be significantly less than 3000 litres per hour.
To repeat this important point ... maximum flow (in this case 3000 litres per hour or about 660 gallons per hour or gph) occurs at pond surface and as pumping height (called head) increases the actual flow of water that can be delivered by the pump falls away.
In choosing a pump you always need to refer to the table of head versus flow or use the graph often supplied by the manufacturer and shown on the submersible pump box. If you look at the table below this will become clearer ...

As an example the Cascade 3000 will only pump 1,875 litre per hour at 1 metre high. This is only about 60% of the 660 gph it pumps at pond surface with no tubing attached. The tubing takes up the equivalent of about 20 cm head in most cases. So for a waterfall 1 metre high rather use the figure in the 1.2 metre column. In this case the Cascade 3000 will deliver even less at 1,550 lph or 340 gallons per hour
If you ever have any doubt there is a golden rule ... buy the next larger pump size
