Open cell foam is inside the filter box. Its job is to remove leaves, and larger particles that might find their way into the pond (eg small twigs, fish faeces etc). It has a limited amount of biological capacity.

The Hozelock Ecomax pond filter box is quite compact. The Ecomax is easier to hide because both the inlet and outlets are close to the top of the box. This means the filter box can be buried into ground up to the inlet or outlet point. Water is pumped into the Ecomax through a venturi spray head which helps to oxygenate the water entering the filter (bacterial activity requires large amounts of oxygen). The foam inside the filter needs to be periodically cleaned.

The Hozelock Vortron built into the Ecomax is designed with built in "turbulator" to increase the efficiency of the UVC, creating even exposure to the UV light & eliminating the possibility of airlocks. Water leaves the UV chamber via a venturi which aerates the water for a high oxygen content. The water then passes through the bio media where beneficial bacteria cleanse pollutants The Ecomax filters should be sited at the highest point of your pond (eg top of waterfall) or use a pond pump with sufficient strength to the water split flow so that part flow goes to the garden pond filter 24/7 and the remainder to the garden pond  waterfall or fountain nozzle.

The flow of water through the UVC, created by the product design' In built turbulator', it increases the ecomax filter efficiency by exposure of the water to the UV light. And again destroys the possibility of air locks.

The venturi's position in the filter is important, because the water then leaves the UV chamber well aerated and makes the water ready for filter bacteria to break down the harmful pollutants (mainly ammonia and nitrites) in the pond water. These beneficial bacteria cleanse pollutants and sit on the plastic tube surfaces (called biomedia). The biomedia contained in the Hozelock Ecomax filter it has been scientifically tested for good biological filtration performance.

A pond venturi is a simple device that has a narrow throat in the water flow pipe. At this throat of the venturi a vertical pipe is attached and this pipe is open to air ... because water is forced through the narrow throat region of the venturi the water pressure is reduced at this point allowing air to be sucked down the air pipe ... on reaching the throat the air mixes with the highly turbulent water allowing oxygen to be absorbed by the water flow.

The Ecomax also has a built in drain to drain unwanted sludge. Other features include carry handles and an inspection hatch.

The UVC eliminates suspended green algae from the pond and makes it clear.
