Foam is not only a way of trapping debris such as sticks, and leaves. All solid debris in a pond adds to the organic loading and this has to be broken down by bacteria. Hence the more solids that can be removed at the filter inlet the better. However the foam is what is called open cell and this means in simple terms that millions of bacteria can easily find a home in which to live. Keep your sponge free of mud and slimy algae if at all possible since this will allow well oxygenated water coming into contact with bacteria holding in the foam or sponge.

Solid media on which bacteria live in a pond filter is called biomedia and there are many types. The most common is a plastic tube (see below) or ball although any surface area will do. However the best media for small to medium size ponds is called Alfagrog (named Supra pond media in the USA)

Plastic Tubes and Biomedia for Pond Filters

There is a product called Flocor which is sold around the world as a biofilter medium ... a biomedium is a place where bacteria can happily live by clinging to a surface that comes into intimate contact with water containing nutrients and oxygen. Flocor is one of thousands of possible media. They have just done a great job of marketing their product over the years. Just in case someone does not know what Flocor, let me describe it ... it is a hollow black plastic tube with a few ridges. It is about 1 inch diameter and 2 inches high, normally black.

The ridges by the way are cosmetic to all intents and purposes. Flocor looks similar to any other simple plastic tube with minor ridges and is not better than any other ordinary plastic tube with or without ridges. And the fact that it's black is not important.
