Low Cost Pond Filters & UVC System Hozelock Ecostar Bio-filters
Hozelock Ecostar units ranging form 500 to 2000 US gallons pond. They are effective Pond Filter & UVC combo's for clean and clear garden fish ponds all year round. The Ecostar models contains an integral Vortron UVC (ultra-violet clarifier) built into the lid. In the UK this filter is called the Hozelock Ecopower and its units are expressed in litres.
Meaning of The Model Number
If we use the Hozelock Ecostar 500 filter as an example the product identifier code number refers to the volume of pond water the biofilter is capable of cleaning and clearing (from suspended algae). Thus the Ecostar 500 is suitable for ponds up to 500 gallons.
The unit is easy to disguise when positioned near the pond. These Hozelock UK designed filter types are the solution for clear and healthy goldfish and koi ponds (see table below). The Ecostar 2000 is suitable for ponds up to 2000 gallons.

Water enters the unit and passes close to a UV-lamp (flows inside a quartz tube). UV Light makes algae clump together, they then become much larger particles and are able to removed by the foam inside the Ecostar.

Water leaves the UV chamber via a spray head. This spray head aerates the water for a high oxygen content.

Solid particles and debris in the water are trapped by open cell foam sheet before the water passes through plastic biomedia where beneficial bacteria do the job of cleaning ammonia and nitrite pollutants. The amount of biomedia contained in the filter depends upon the filter model.

Clear healthy water then passes up an outlet tube and back into the goldfish or koi pond.

Beneficial bacteria cleanse pollutants and sit on the plastic tube surfaces in side the Ecostar combined UVC and filter models (called biomedia).
The UVC eliminates suspended green algae from the pond and makes it clear.
