Hozelock New Trinamic Pond Filter Uses Kaldnes Bio Filter Media

Advanced Pond Filtration Made Simple Hozelock Trinamic is a new high performance bio filter for ponds containing high fish stock densities and ponds up to 20,000 litres or 5,000 gallons

The new biofilter from Hozelock called the Hozelock Trinamic is a high performance biological filter designed for those larger ponds up to 20,000 litres or 5,000 gallons and especially those larger ponds when stocked with a large mass of pond fish. This bio filter produces top class water quality for even healthier koi and gold fish. Such fish lead more active lives, become stronger and grow more quickly. The filter includes the modern and effective biofilter medium called Kaldnes. The medium Kaldnes functions on a moving bed (agitated) principle that allows good contact between food oxygen and bacteria in the filter.

 The moving bed of Kaldnes works as follows in the Hozelock Trinamic Water enters the filter box at high velocity and this flow rate induces random and rapid movement between the small plastic Kaldnes "cylinders" all the time submersed in oxygen enriched water. The water enters the Hozelock Trinamic via a venturi which then allows more air to be sucked into this "cauldron" of moving biomedia.

Because there is constant movement of the biomedia (Kaldnes) inside the Hozelock Trinamic biofilter box this allows those beneficial bacteria sitting on the surface of the Kaldnes to always have a fresh food supply (ammonia and nitrite contained in the water) and fresh oxygen also dissolved in the water. This represents the ideal chemical engineering characteristics for conversion of ammonia and nitrite to less harmful nitrates. The moving Kaldnes also has another advantage in that the weaker or dying bacteria get dislodged from the Kaldnes and are trapped n the foam modules of the biofilter. Settled sludge can be drained through the bottom valve. The sponges are cleaned in situ using a specially designed plunger to squash the foams and discharge the collected debris.

The extra high efficiency of this process allows the Hozelock Trinamic bio filter to be encased in a much smaller box that makes for easier hiding in a garden pond environment. A further advantage of the Hozelock Trinamic is that the nitrate build up is reduced by incorporating a denitrification chamber in the Hozelock Trinamic. This is a relatively still environment where there is a low level of oxygen in the water. This absence of oxygen allows bacteria to break down nitrates into gaseous nitrogen which escapes to the atmosphere.
